Wednesday 18th December – Update
Branston Bridge has been undergoing essential repairs to address a damaged parapet, and SCC are pleased to announce that these repairs are now complete. The bridge is set to reopen to limited traffic on Thursday, 19 December, following the installation of additional signage to aid motorists.
To ensure the long-term safety and structural integrity of the bridge, new width restrictions will be enforced. From now on, only vehicles measuring 2.1 metres or less in width will be permitted to cross.
An extended network of updated signage will be in place to notify drivers well in advance of the new restrictions. We urge all motorists to check the width of their vehicles before using the route.
To further support compliance:
• CCTV cameras have been installed on the bridge, and footage of any oversized vehicles attempting to cross will be shared with enforcement authorities.
• Highways officers will be stationed at the bridge for the first few days after reopening to assist motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow.
Please note that safety remains our top priority, and the bridge will be closed again if misuse or safety concerns arise.
Future Repairs
Following the Christmas break, Branston Bridge is anticipated to close again in mid January 2025 for more extensive repairs. These works are necessary to accommodate wider and heavier vehicles in the future. The schedule for these repairs is subject to obtaining permissions from key stakeholders, including Network Rail and utility providers.
We are committed to keeping residents and road users informed and will share updates on progress and timings as soon as they are available from SCC
